Lake Eyre 2011 Spectacular

3
Days

In a uniquely Australian event, the desert in the normally dead heart of this massive land will fill with water covering an area larger than Belgium. The devastating rains from Cyclone Yasi in Queensland will send huge amounts of water through Western and Southern Queensland. Earlier rains are already making their way down to the “Warburton Groove” at the top of Lake Eyre and then adding to last year's flood and spreading out at a rapid rate. The Lake, which is 15 metres below sea level, last filled to capacity in 1974. In 2011 we will see an unprecendented third year is a row where this rare event will occur and draw incredible amounts of birds and wildlife, briefly restoring life to this ancient land.

Day 01 Adelaide - Coober Pedy

Fly from your home city to Adelaide and connect to Coober Pedy with Regional Express. After checking in to the Desert Cave Hotel, grab a quick lunch (not included) before heading off to explore the town. Coober Pedy holds a fascination for visitors from all over the world. An 'underground' town where you could arrive with just the shirt on your back and leave a millionaire. Rainbow flashes of opal, underground homes, easy-going lifestyle and the mystery of the dusty lunar landscape make Coober Pedy a unique and special place. Tour the town, hear about its history, about their precious water supplies and power generation. Every element of life is hard-won in Coober Pedy. The Desert Cave Hotel allows you to experience dug-out style living, underground shops, bar and opal display areas – all within sandstone surrounds in the heart of Coober Pedy. As well as above and below ground accommodation, they offer outstanding dining facilities.

Day 02 Lake Eyre - William Creek

Lake Eyre is the lowest point in Australia at approximately 15 metres below sea level and is the largest dry salt lake in Australia. No roads exist in this area and they can only be viewed from the air. Then enjoy the visual extremities of Lake Eyre, Australia's largest inland lake, with its incredible colours and patterns that are accentuated from the air. A totally captivating flight that will return you both visually impacted and educationally enriched. The only way to get the full impact is from the air where you will have direct access to the pilot for any questions you may have. See prehistoric river systems, where they enter the lake and to create a magnificent art form.
